Introducing the JYHS Library – more than just books!

The School Library is managed by Mrs K. Wilson, a Chartered Librarian, supported at break and lunch by a team of pupil library monitors from S2 to S6. These pupils give up more than 2000 hours of their free time a year to help – tidying shelves, issuing books, helping create the displays and much more.

Nearly 900 pupils a week use the library at break and lunch, while over 1000 pupils use the library over a week in class time. In fact 75% of pupils say that the library has helped them with their school work.

The school librarian works with every department in school to support the curriculum. Working together to create and present over 40 different library based lessons a year. 70% of the pupils agree that the library has helped them learn how to find and use information, while 60% think the library has helped them make judgements on the information.

When are we open?

We are open throughout the day from 8.35am until 4.15pm (1:15pm on Fridays) for pupils and staff to read, work and use the wealth of resources available to them. You’ll find us just next to the Computing department.

What have we got?

The Library has a wealth of resources – fiction, information books, e- books, e-audio books, newspapers, magazines, as well as access to a computer suite and printer.

You can access the online resources via the council library website

The librarian also manages the school lockers – £10 per year (£5 back at the end when the key is returned). Please ask for an application form.

Also based in the Library is the Skills Development Scotland – Careers Adviser, and a wide selection of careers information and guides, and university and college prospectuses. More than half of senior pupils have found this resource has helped them make career decisions.

How do I borrow?

Every pupil has a library account. To borrow a book all they need to do is ask at the main desk. Pupils can borrow 3 books for 3 weeks. They can get the book for longer simply by asking. Pupils can also request titles that they can’t find on our shelves.
