JYHS Library Comic Con II

50 pupils joined 4 industry professionals for a full day of comic book related fun.

The day was jointly organised with Harry Giles, Reader in Residence for West Lothian Libraries.

Reading for Enjoyment

library-annual-report-7All S1, S2 and S3 English classes were encouraged to read for pleasure with support from the library.

All classes had set library times and the option for book boxes to be sent to the classrooms.

The Librarian provided advice and suggestions.

JYHS Library organised for author Philip Caveney to speak to the S1.

Fortnightly displays have covered everything from Hallowe’en Book Hunt to Shakespeare Insult Generator.

Senior Library Monitors did a Fixers Project on Mental Health Awareness in Schools

46 pupils helped regularly in the library

By the end of S6 a Library Monitor will have volunteered for 450 hours.

SDS Careers Adviser ran drop in sessions in the library.

Plus JYHS Library supported leavers at all stages with applications including UCAS.


9 pupils have been supported to do their Silver DofE through the library group.

JASS LogoEvery S2 pupil volunteered a period in the library as part of their JASS.

For the second year we gave away 64 books as part of World Book Night

JYHS Library ran a staff ‘Get Caught Reading’ poster campaign.

Two Book Fairs were held including at the Open Evening and S1 Parents’ Night


JYHS Library was used 17 periods a week regularly with most weeks hitting more than 31 classes booked in.

JYHS Library facilitated information literacy skills with:

English – all S1, S2 and S3 classes;

Modern Languages – S2;

Science – S2, Nat 5 and Higher;

RMPS – Higher;

Philosophy – Higher;

History – Higher;

CDT – Advanced Higher;

Geography – Advanced Higher

In addition to the set funding, Morrisons donated prizes for Hallowe’en and Scholastic gave £50 of books for Prizes.

Additional funds were also found for Chinese Resources and the Healthy Reading Scheme.


JYHS Library ran a whole staff CPD session to share how the library could support teachers.

Library Use

Over 32,000 pupil visits were made to the library outside of class time.

More than 36,000 pupils visits were made during class time.
